Tuesday 12 March 2019 – Arthur Burns, Sam Callaghan and Patricia Methven – Georgian Papers Programme

The Georgian Papers Programme is an ambitious international collaboration which sees the Royal Archives working with partners King’s College London, the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture and William & Mary to make freely available online the Georgian Papers held in the Round Tower at Windsor Castle. The collection is huge, and to a considerable extent unexplored and uncatalogued. The project team is exploring new ways of working and collaboration between archivists, academics in various humanities disciplines and digital humanists in order to maximise the opportunities. In this talk, a historian, an archivist and a digital humanist from the project will jointly explore the challenges and opportunities the project presents.

It will outline the digital workflow of the programme, encompassing its three technical partners and explain the functionality offered by the collaborative workspace that is in development. Further, it will address methods of transcription and metadata augmentation that support this development.

Speakers include Arthur Burns, Professor of Modern British History and academic director of the GPP, Sam Callaghan, the programme’s Metadata Analyst based at the  King’s Digital Laboratory, and Patricia Methven, Programme Manager and Director of Archives and Information Management at King’s for over 30 years.

This seminar is 5:15 pm – 6:15 pm, 12 March 2019, in Room 203 (the John S Cohen Room), second floor, Institute of Historical Research. The IHR is in the North block of Senate House, University of London. Find Senate House on Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HU. It will also be livestreamed.
